There are two different types of physicians. There is the M.D., the Doctor of Medicine and the D.O., the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. M.D.s are also known as allopathic physicians. Both, the M.D and the D.O. may use all methods of treatment and may prescribe drugs and perform surgery. D.O.s, however, focus more on preventive medicine and holistic care and are more likely to be primary care specialists only. All physicians work irregular and mostly long hours, with up to 60 hours each week.

Primarily, chiropractic examines the relationship between the spine and the nervous system and how it affects health and the well being of our body. Chiropractic physicians generally do not prescribe drugs, nor do they perform surgery. Instead, they rather focus on the body’s ability to heal itself and support the maintenance of a balanced and functioning neuromusculoskeletal system.

What are the education requirements for physicians?
In order to become a physician, it takes many years of education and training. Students begin with completing their undergraduate degree which generally takes 4-5 years in medical school. In addition, students are required to complete 3-8 years of internship and residence, depending on the specialty selected. Premedical students must complete classes in physics, biology, mathematics, English and inorganic as well as organic chemistry. In addition, students are required to take classes in humanities and social sciences. It is common that students volunteer their time at local hospitals or clinics in order to gain insight into the every day routines in the health profession.
What is an anesthesiologist?
Anesthesiologists are concerned with surgical patients and focus on the pain relief prior, during and after any kind of surgery. They also evaluate and examine their patients and then direct their efforts to other colleagues in order to debate appropriate treatments and procedures for that specific patient. It is the concern of an anesthesiologist to maintain the patient’s vital functions, such as heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure etc throughout the entire surgery. Anesthesiologists therefore monitor and assess patients on a permanent basis.
